Chapter 3: Back To Work

The next morning I woke up and got ready just in time to leave for the cafe. Because I skipped work yesterday I had to open, which really sucked. When I got to the cafe I saw Stella with coffee for everyone so I rushed over to her to get mine before I opened. When I got over to her she said "Good morning sleepy head, your late."

"By five minutes" I said.

"Five minutes is a long time." I smirked. I got my key out and fumbled with it till I got it the right way to open the doors. Finally Stella helped me with it and we got the doors open. While I put the key back in my purse, Stella went and put the coffees on the counter. A couple minutes later my other employees came in and headed straight to the back to put their stuff away.

"Good morning Allison" said Violet. I gave her a wave and a smile.

"I just put on the coffee" said Ian.

"Okay, good. Now, Stella can you heat up the oven for our pastries?" I asked.

"Sure thing, boss" she replied. After that I would start making them and Violet could keep and eye on them. At this moment I was going to get our meals set up for the day, and then I would have to think of a special we could have.

"Do you guys have any ideas for our special today?" I asked.

"How about chicken penne with garlic bread on the side and a Chocolate fudge sundae for desert?" Suggested Ian.

"Thats perfect, thanks Ian."

"Your welcome." Finally that weight was off my shoulders. Just then our first customer of the day walked in. It was my next door neighbor, Celia. She wasn't my favorite person in the world so I had Violet take care of her.

".... Have an iced coffee to go" I heard her say, so I got it ready and when it was done Violet came in to tell me her order. She was very surprised it was done but then she remembered the open section on the wall that leads out to the cafe. Violet then took it out to her, after Celia paid she left and I felt so relieved. I don't know why I feel so anxious around her but I do.

Just then Stella walked in and asked "Whats wrong?"

"Celia was here" I said in a low voice.

"Why do you always take a hit on your self esteem whenever she's in the room?" She asked.

"I don't know, I just do."

"Well you have to stop, Your just as pretty as she is, actually your prettier" she said calmly.

"Your right, thanks Stell."

"I always am, and your welcome." Stella always knew what to say to make a person feel better ever since kindergarten, I don't know why, I never did. After all that the pastries were done and when I took them out the cafe was packed and it was only nine in the morning. Wow I thought.

At around ten we slowed down for awhile which gave us some time to relax before the lunch rush. Today was actually going pretty good, when we had the big crowd my mom dropped by to get my little brother a donut. I love my little brother, His name is Jonah, He is only 8 and I love him so much. Much more than my sister, Jane, she's only 14 and my whole family has a really good feeling that she is on drugs. It's really obvious that she is because she is always hiding stuff when we walk into her room and she staggers around a lot to.

Just then I heard the door open and it was Shane, so I went rushing out into his arms. "Hey, I brought you lunch" he said.

"Thanks, what is it?" I asked.

"It is chicken and ceaser salad."

"Mmmm, Thanks again."

"Your welcome."
"So whats for dinner tonight?" I asked. I hadn't really thought about it all morning and now it just pops into my head. I guess i'm hungry.

"Umm, i'll pick up stakes for dinner and cook them with some potatoes" he said.

"Okay, now you have to go we're about to get our lunchtime customers" I said as I started pulling him out the door.

"Okay, okay" he said. After I got him out the oven went off and I knew the lunches were done. I got them out just in time, two customers walked in and they wanted the specials.

*************

The rest of the day went great, I made some really good tips and I'm starting to think that the cafe is gonna make some good money. That night as I was closing up I got a call. It was my mother, she said that she went by the house to drop something off when she heard a horrible crash in the back. Turns out Shane was on the roof trying to position the satellite and that was when he fell. So my mother took him to the hospital, luckily our roof isn't that high so he didn't brake any bones but he did sprain quite a bit.

After I hung up with my mom I bundled up (because it was winter) and headed to the hospital. When I got there I asked the girl at the desk what room Shane was in. When she told me I went rushing in there and broke down in tears. I was very emotional when someone I loved got hurt. As I grabbed Shane's hand I started hyperventilating. "Why did this have to happen to us" I said between gasps.

"It's not your fault, I just slipped and fell"

"No, it is my fault. If I would have just got a new satellite we wouldn't be in this mess." I cried. Just then a doctor came in and told me I had to leave so I said okay and left. As I drove home I thought, it is gonna feel so weird sleeping in a bed all alone.
